Doris Pearl Stancil was born on July 29, 1923, in Kenly, Johnston County, North Carolina. She was the fourth child and third daughter of Lonnie and Susy Renfrow Stancil. Family members often noted that Doris bore a strong resemblance to her mother.

Ward Jackson Laughinghouse was born on September 29, 1921, in Pamplico County, North Carolina. He was the son of William and Ola Dunn Laughinghouse.

Meeting, Marriage, and Building a Family

Doris and Ward's paths crossed when Ward was living in Wilson, North Carolina. Even when Ward later moved to New Bern, North Carolina, they maintained their connection. Their relationship culminated in marriage on September 29, 1942, in Wilson, North Carolina.

Following their marriage, Doris and Ward settled in New Bern, North Carolina. They soon began their family, welcoming three children:

Ward found employment at the Craven Foundry Machine Co. Both Ward and Doris were active and faithful members of the First Baptist Church of New Bern.

Grandchildren and Later Life

Doris and Ward enjoyed the blessing of grandchildren: Kim Leese, Greg Williams, and Jason Laughinghouse. Their family continued to grow with the arrival of great-grandchildren: Dylan, Christopher, Nathan, and Patrick Leese.

Ward's Passing

Ward Jackson Laughinghouse passed away at the age of 82 on October 16, 2003, at Craven Regional Medical Center. He was laid to rest in the New Bern Memorial Cemetery.

Doris's Final Years and Passing

In her later years, Doris battled significant health issues, including emphysema, and had been on oxygen for several years. She spent her last few years residing with her son, Steven, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Doris Pearl Stancil Laughinghouse passed away at home in Raleigh on May 17, 2007, at the age of 83, due to emphysema. A graveside service was held at New Bern Memorial Cemetery in Craven, North Carolina, with Rev. Steven Fitzgerald officiating, where she was laid to rest beside her beloved husband.

Tragically, just two months after Doris's passing, their middle child, Ward Jackson "Jackie" Laughinghouse Jr., died at the age of 57 on July 18, 2007, at his home in Raleigh. Jackie, born on December 22, 1949, had honorably served in the Air Force as a sergeant, including time in Vietnam. He is also buried in the New Bern Memorial Cemetery, joining his parents.
