Mildred Bertha Hill attended Stancil's Chapel. She quit school and began seeing Ishmael Worth Narron, son of Dewy and Hettie Jane Narron.

Dewy had a farm and two mules, Della and Ella. Hettie took care of the cow, churned butter, and maintained a large garden.

Challenges & Life Changes

In December 1937, during a prison break, Dewy suffered a severe head injury, shifting more of the farming responsibilities to Ishmael, who was only 10 at the time. Dewy passed away in 1939.

Ishmael attended Glendale School but dropped out after eight years to farm.

Military Service

On Dec. 3, 1945, Ishmael was drafted into the Army and trained at Fort McClellan, AL. He traveled to Germany for security duty and returned on Dec. 25, 1947, aboard the USS George Washington.

Marriage & Family Life

While Mildred was visiting a great aunt, she and Ishmael secretly got married in Wilson on Nov. 12, 1951. Days later, Ishmael informed Mildred’s mother, who responded, "I hope you get along good."

They farmed for a year before moving to Raleigh, where Ishmael worked in construction and Mildred canned, crocheted, and sewed.

They had four children: Worth Lawrence (born May 31, 1953), Danny Gene (March 26, 1955), Kenneth Wayne (Oct. 10, 1958), and Angela Jewel (Nov. 9, 1965).

Later Years & Passing

Mildred worked at Devil Dog clothing factory for a few years. She had diabetes and was hospitalized due to complications. After suffering a stroke, she was moved to a nursing home in Clayton, where she remained until she passed away on May 1, 2003.

She was laid to rest in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Johnston County, NC.
