William “Bill” Arthur Stancil Jr., second son of Arthur and Clyde Holland Stancil, was born Aug. 8, 1925.
Bill completed two years of high school at Glendale High School in Johnston County, North Carolina, before dropping out to accompany his brother Tom to Wilmington, N.C. Bill was just 15. Bill and Tom worked in the shipyards in Wilmington.
They rented a room at a rooming house owned by Uncle George’s son Emmette and run by his wife Dessie. (Emmette was a first cousin of his father.)
Bill joined the Army on Nov. 23, 1943, and reported to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville. He was 18. Bill listed his occupation as a farm hand. Bill completed training and was sent to Germany. He was part of the Army unit that freed the prisoners at Dachau Death Camp on April 29, 1945. He saw a cousin of the Hills, Jack Boykin, son of Matthew Boykin.
Bill stayed in the Army until the war was over, then got his GED.
After several years of living together, Bill, Margaret, and Clyde moved into their own homes. Bill settled in Virginia and moved Clyde in with him. Margaret moved into her own place in Maryland. In 1974, she moved to Virginia.
Tom, Bill, and Margaret had serious disagreements that resulted in years without speaking to each other.
The love of Bill's life was a beautiful girl, Lucky, from Kansas City. Lucky was anxious to get married. Bill wanted to take things slow. Lucky became impatient and married another man. Bill and Lucky stayed in touch for several years. Bill never found another lady that measured up to Lucky.
Bill worked for The Walter Leamon Company, a food brokerage firm in the District of Columbia and Maryland. He was the manager, responsible for buying and selling. Bill also managed the purchase and sale of the company's large fleet of vehicles. He retired after 35 years.
Bill's hobby was reading books about history. He shared this love of reading with his mother.
Bill did not want Clyde writing to Jean. Clyde gave Becky two beautiful pieces of costume jewelry, then told her to keep it a secret.
Clyde lived with Bill from 1947 until she died in 1984.
Bill bought four plots in the Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont, North Carolina, for Clyde, Tom, Margaret, and himself but only Clyde, Margaret, and Bill were buried there. Tom is buried in the Holland Family Cemetery in Pinkney, Wayne, NC.
Clyde's wake on April 22, 1984, was held in Fremont.
Thelma Bailey, wife of Bill Artis Bailey, son of Delia, attended along with Pauline, wife of Archer Bailey, another son of Delia’s. Delia was the oldest daughter of Tempy Ann Stancil Hill.
When Babs, Clyde's mixed Beagle-Bassett hound dog, died, she was cremated and her ashes buried at Clyde's gravesite.
Bill died April 16, 2003, in Fairfax, Virginia. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont, North Carolina.
