Charles "Chuck" Charleston Stancil, son of Freedom Elbert Stancil and Gladys Pearl Lamm, grew up in Wilson, NC. He was nicknamed Dickey by his older sister Sheila and by others.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad. He graduated from high school and joined the Air Force in 1955. His older brother, Jay, had joined the Air Force earlier. Chuck was sent to Palm Beach Air Force Base when he was 21. He met 15-year-old Judith “Judy” Ann Wilson from West Palm Beach, Florida.

Judy was the daughter of Carmlee Harris and Harry Wilson. They had moved to Palm Beach County, Fla., in time for the 1945 Florida Census.

Chuck and Judy’s attraction and love developed quickly. They eloped and were married in Danville, Georgia, on Halloween Eve, Oct. 30, 1959. They kept their marriage a secret. Judy went back home and reluctantly told her parents that she was married. Chuck was sent to the Azores Islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. Son Robert Edward Stancil and daughter Robin Elaine Stancil were born.

While in the Air Force, Chuck was a member of the mapping crew of Operation Hardtack in the Marshall Islands in 1958. Tests were conducted on ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) and SLBM (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile) warheads and bombs. After one test, he actually saw the bottom of the ocean.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Chuck worked for many years at Cape Kennedy for the Bendix Corporation.

Bendix Corporation had a contract with NASA in the building and launching of missiles.

Chuck and Judy lived in Florida for many years. While in Florida, they had a weekend house on a canal at Lake Placid, Fla. Judy was a generous, giving person who made friends easily—she even left extra food for their elderly neighbor before heading back home each time.

Chuck retired in 2002. He and Judy moved to Blairsville, GA, only 5 miles from NC. They built their dream house. Here they found a church home, many friends, and a great golf course. They enjoyed camping, boating, hunting, and fishing.

She was diagnosed in 2002 with breast cancer, but it was successfully treated. Judy became a breast cancer survivor, and she and Chuck attended the 2007 Stancil Reunion.

Judy's cancer returned, and she was hospitalized in Gainesville, Georgia. The entire family gathered, including son Bob from Florida, and Robin from N.C.

Bob passed away on June 13, 2018.
